Using a Helium Leak Detection System For Protection
When you have a Vacuum Degassing of equipment that isn't something that you have to move around very often, it makes sense to employ the services of an industrial hygienist to determine the leakiness of the atmosphere inside your helium tank. In the event of a leak, an even more dangerous spillage could result. As with any environment, there are many other aspects of a helium tank that must be considered to ensure maximum safety.
The first thing you need to do is examine the appearance of the tank and to examine its markings on the surface. Most tanks are marked with three numbers that are located in the center of the tank. These numbers indicate the storage pressure of the helium inside the tank.
You should look for any signs of damage, holes or dents in the number's along with bubbles in the air. The number's should be completely smooth or have no signs of damage or wear whatsoever. There may also be a label that will indicate the value of the tank and whether it is a one or a five-thousand cubic feet container.
When inspecting the valve, check to see if it's locked into the hose. If the valve cannot be inserted and locked properly, it is not providing you with the maximum amount of safety. If you notice a problem with the valve itself, make sure that you have replaced it.
Measurements can be taken on any equipment to ensure that it's working correctly. If a valve is locked, you will need to open it by unscrewing the nuts, which are located right behind the screw on the top of the valve. After taking measurements, you can use the pin hole punch to mark where the hole needs to be drilled to gain access to the valve.
It is important to note that these drills that are used to make the measurements should be accurate to within the micrometer. Any additional tool should not be a part of the drilling process. Using anything else, such as a drill bit that's shorter than the drill bits you already have is a sure way to cause a larger leak.
If a water mixture has been used to lower the gas pressure inside the tank, you should turn off the power supply and shut off the oxygen supply before opening the valve. You should ensure that the valve is screwed all the way down with a wrench to prevent any damage to the pump. The screws should be of a metal type as this will prevent the valves from being removed by force. If the water is being allowed to flow through the hose, you will need to close the valve to prevent any water from entering into the hose, which could cause serious damage to the pump and could even prove fatal if the water is allowed to overflow.
Do not place the hose into the tank to test for leaks. The water in the hose will not dissipate quickly enough to allow for a reliable leak detection system. If you suspect that there is a leak, you should not leave the hose in the tank.
There are several parts that make up a leak detection system. The pump, valve, hose and gauge should all be checked. Each of these items will require the use of a valve screwdriver and a measuring tape to ensure the best results.
When checking the valve, you will need to make sure that the nut is in the correct position and that the valve is securely fastened. When the valve is secured, turn the screw a quarter turn. If there is still any resistance in the screw, there may be a leak inside the valve.
Next, you should measure the distance between the seal at the end of the hose and the valve itself. In cases where the hose is short, you should use a smaller valve to make the measurements. If the hose is long, the larger valve should be used.
A leak detection system is a very useful tool to have in your workplace. If you notice a leak, make sure that the leak is in the correct area. and not caused by too much oxygen.
