A Counselor Aurora CO is an educational professional who assists people, couples or groups with achieving academic goals, communicating effectively, improving communication, exploring academic options and overcoming challenges. In general, the main function of the college counselor is to aid students in achieving graduation from high school and complete their secondary education. The college counselor will usually possess an extensive range of skills including problem-solving, leadership, teaching and cooperative learning among others. There are many types of college counselors. It is important to identify the type of counselor you would like to have before you contact or hire one.

An Interdisciplinary Counselor, as his name implies, specializes in a specific area of study. Counselors are required to obtain a master's degree in order to specialize in a certain area such as behavioral health, career counseling or social services. Counselors who acquire the master's degree are often able to go on to become full-fledged psychologists. Counselors also have opportunities to go on to become directors of specific departments, such as human services, employment and labor relations, or education and societal sciences departments.

An Online Counselor is a college or university counselor who receives and manages student emails. He or she will use a variety of communication tools to advise students. An online master's degree in Counselor Education and Supervision can often lead to a position as an online school counselor. Career counselors work in private practice, government agencies and schools. A career center counselor works in education settings and often serves as an administrator or a teacher's aide.

A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is not affiliated with any specific school or institution but carries a certification from the American Psychological Association or other equivalent accrediting body. Licensed professionals are psychologists who hold at least a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree or a doctoral degree in psychology. A Licensed Professional Counselor may work in a variety of settings including school counseling, healthcare settings, government programs, therapy programs and private practices. A license can be required by state law and professional credentials can be verified online.

Psychotherapy is the practice of treating people with psychological disorders or other mental health problems. There are many types of psychotherapy; however, the most popular forms include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Family Therapy and Group Therapy. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy focuses on the understanding of how our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and others affect our behavioral responses. For instance, you may find that your view of marriage and divorce negatively affect your relationship. In order to understand these types of therapies and seek effective strategies for change, therapists develop skill sets such as cognitive restructuring, interpersonal skills and problem management.

Marriage and divorce counselors deal with the issues that surround a marriage and help couples work through their problems. Counselors are generally required to obtain a certificate from a local school counseling program, although licensure is not required by most states. Students entering into this field are usually expected to enter into a Master's program before they become full-fledged counselors. It is also possible to obtain a Bachelor's degree as an LPCA certified marriage and divorce counselor. However, in order to become licensed, a student must complete a minimum of six to twelve weeks of college counseling.

The majority of psychologists in private practice are not formally trained psychologists, even though most states require that a licensed therapist take a certain amount of training in order to practice in that state. Licensed practical/business psychologists generally take between one and two years to complete an undergraduate degree, while becoming psychologists who are licensed by the state to take approximately three years to earn a bachelor's degree and another year to complete a master's degree. There is currently no requirement that Licensed Practical Psychotherapists have any board certification, but board certification does not necessarily mean that the therapist is expertly trained in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of psychological disorders.

Marriage and Divorce Counselors is found throughout the United States. Most of these counselors are located in metropolitan areas. Marriage and divorce counselors are required by law to be supervised during patient sessions. Generally, marriage and divorce counselors will have a licensed therapist who is physically present during sessions with their patients. However, there are some instances when a marriage and divorce counselor may work remotely or through teleconferencing.
