Radon Fan Installation - How to Protect Yourself and Your Family From Radon Gas

Protect your family and yourself during cool summer days. You will save money in the long run by preventing radiation poisoning.

Although it is rare for homeowners radon mitigation Thornton CO to be at risk of exposure to radon, installing a radon gas detector in the home can help prevent you from exposing yourself and your family to this hazardous gas. Radon gas is often present in the ground or other areas in the home where there are high levels of exposure from pipes, ducts, and vents.

Finding radon gas detectors that meet your home's specific needs can be difficult if you aren't aware of the various types of detectors out there. Before you purchase your new detector, it's important to make sure that you're not going to be exposed to a risk of radon contamination.

"A lot of people don't know that there are two different types of radon gas detectors available on the market today," says Mike Lathrop, M.D., a radon gas expert with Radon Gas Detection & Testing in Loveland, Colorado. "There are residential detectors and commercial detectors." The difference between the two types of detectors can be difficult to determine without first comparing each type's features.

"If you're looking for residential detectors, you need to make sure that you get one that's small enough to fit in your hand," says Dr. Lathrop. "This way, you can feel it when you're looking for it, rather than seeing it when you're searching for it. Also, you need to find a small casing so that it won't be hard to break the case open and access the detector."

When looking for a new radon detector, it's also important to compare the prices. You should not find that the lowest price available is the best possible price.

It's not just the cost of the detector that is important, though. The technology used by radon gas detectors, such as digital signal processing (DSP) technology, is also important.

"DSP technology is what makes these detectors as accurate as they are," says Dr. Lathrop. "It allows for higher reading rates in a smaller space. Because of this, it can make room for more sophisticated models of radon gas detectors."

By using DSP technology, a detector is able to identify radon in small spaces in the home, without having to rely on other factors such as the presence of vents, pipes, or cracks in the home's foundation. A sensor that is found in a small casing is placed inside of this space and then a computer program is run to determine what radiation is present.

There are many components to the sensors, which are often placed inside the entire home, including cabinets, basements, laundry rooms, etc. Radon gas can travel through cracks in the floor or walls of the home.

The sensors themselves are very sensitive, making radon gas detectors very beneficial in homes with higher levels of exposure. You may want to locate one of these detectors in areas of the home where there are also likely to be higher levels of radon exposure, like the basement, the attic, or the furnace or air-conditioning ductwork.

Using a radon gas detector can be a cost-effective way to protect your family and yourself during cool summer days. You will save money in the long run by preventing radiation poisoning.
